  Nick Connor: An amazing performance by Nicholson, hampered slightly by Kubrick's peculiar vision of one of my favourite teenage reads. Too much atmosphere and not enough genuine scares and when things do start to kick off, it all seems to be too rushed. It has always annoyed me how Nicholson changes from normal to nutcase seemingly all of a sudden without the book's slow and gradual build up. Still, some effective moments and it is creepy.

  Scott B.: This had nothing to do with Stephen King himself...it was Kubrick going off a book of King's but King to this day doesn't endorse it...try the 1997 4-part tv series that King did make himself call "The Shining"..much better!

  Nick Connor: This used to scare the crap out of me, time has dated it somewhat, but the big strength of this adaptation is the performances by the very well chosen cast. Not much gore (it was made for tv) but there are some really unsettling moments (most coming from Pennywise), the scenes with the old woman and the werewolf and the mummy still make my skin creep. Still very much worth a watch.

  Nick Connor: Probably the best all round film of all the King adaptations, moving, creepy, unsettling, bitter, sometimes cruel but so heartfelt and moving at the end. Terrific performance from Michael Clarke Duncan and also from the rest of the cast, Hanks and Morse as the rock solid humanist characters and Hutchison and Rockwell competing for biggest all round scumbag award. An absolute masterpiece.
